AFCON 2023: NFF pays Jose Peseiro ₦1.3 billion despite Super Eagles disappointing loss to Ivory Coast

Former Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro has received a payment of ₦1.3 billion from Nigeria after leading the team to a second-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations tournament. Peseiro’s contract as the Super Eagles coach ended last month, and he was owed as much as 17 months in salaries by the time AFCON ended.

Peseiro’s initial contract paid him $70,000 monthly, but a new deal signed last year saw his monthly earnings reduced by $20,000. The payment of his outstanding wages was confirmed by Oluwashina Okeleji of the BBC. Despite rumors of a potential return to the Super Eagles, Peseiro is not considering coming back to the role, according to Okeleji.

During his time with the Super Eagles, Peseiro faced challenges such as a lack of GPS trackers and delayed wages. His decision not to return means the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) will need to intensify their search for a successor before the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in June against South Africa and Gernot Rohr’s Benin Republic.
